Join us as we highlight the dedicated efforts of community volunteers to clean up marine debris from the “forgotten shorelines” of the U.S. Virgin Islands: mangroves and offshore cays. These rarely-cleaned shorelines face a persistent and heartbreaking issue: marine debris.
Join us as we highlight a mangrove restoration project in St. Thomas, made possible through a unique partnership between the University of the Virgin Islands, the Virgin Islands Department of Education, the Schmidt Ocean Coalition, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Environmental Literacy Program.
Although the impact of invasive seagrass remains largely unknown, diligent researchers from the University of the Virgin Islands are fervently engaged in uncovering its effects on the surrounding ecosystem.
In October of 2022, a collaborative effort between Ocean Spirits, The Hawksbill Project, and the University of the Virgin Islands, conducted the first in-water survey of sea turtles around the island of Carriacou, Grenada.
The Ridge to Reef grant was awarded to the U.S. Virgin Islands in 2020 by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Hosted at the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI). Learn why this is so important for the USVI!
Do you love sea turtles as much as we do? Find out how, and why, marine biologists at the University of the Virgin Islands study these ancient creatures! Plus, learn how the research helps ensure the survival of this endangered species.
Nassau grouper are now listed as commercially extinct on the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources Red List (IUCN) and is considered “Threatened” under the Endangered Species Act. See how conservation efforts and partnerships with local fishermen are helping bring this species back from the brink of extinction.
Biologists at the University of the Virgin Islands with support from VI-EPSCoR Mare Nostrum Caribbean are tagging endangered green and hawksbill sea turtles in an effort to better understand their populations within Brewers Bay. The data gathered from this ongoing project will help the island of St. Thomas to better protect, manage and conserve its sea turtles.
