Join us as we highlight the dedicated efforts of community volunteers to clean up marine debris from the “forgotten shorelines” of the U.S. Virgin Islands: mangroves and offshore cays. These rarely-cleaned shorelines face a persistent and heartbreaking issue: marine debris.
Biologists at the University of the Virgin Islands with support from VI-EPSCoR Mare Nostrum Caribbean are tagging endangered green and hawksbill sea turtles in an effort to better understand their populations within Brewers Bay. The data gathered from this ongoing project will help the island of St. Thomas to better protect, manage and conserve its sea turtles.
Nassau grouper are now listed as commercially extinct on the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources Red List (IUCN) and is considered “Threatened” under the Endangered Species Act. See how conservation efforts and partnerships with local fishermen are helping bring this species back from the brink of extinction.
Join us as we highlight a mangrove restoration project in St. Thomas, made possible through a unique partnership between the University of the Virgin Islands, the Virgin Islands Department of Education, the Schmidt Ocean Coalition, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Environmental Literacy Program.
